Fear of Dental Treatment? Our Sedation Options Will Keep You Relaxed and Stress-Free

Four Personalized Levels of Sedation

Nitrous Oxide
Extremely safe, nitrous oxide (commonly called laughing gas). Many adults in our practice choose nitrous oxide for simple dental cleanings to more complex treatments. Nitrous oxide is inhaled through the nose via a mask that is worn throughout the appointment. Many patients describe their experience as euphoric. There are no side effects from nitrous oxide sedation and most patients can safely drive themselves to and from the office that same day.
1
Oral Sedation
Oral medications taken by mouth can help you relax during your appointment. These medications are generally taken in the office an hour before your appointment. Some of these medications simply help you feel more relaxed while others may make you sleepy and you may have little to no memory of the procedure afterward. This option requires that someone drives you to and from the appointment. In some cases, oral medications can be paired with nitrous oxide.
2
IV Conscious Sedation
IV sedation is a deeper level of sedation than nitrous oxide or oral conscious sedation. IV sedation is administered in our office by a certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA) who is completely dedicated to monitoring your sedation throughout your appointment. Safety is our biggest priority. With IV sedation you will wake up with no memory of the procedure and will need a driver to and from your appointment.
3
General Anesthesia
General anesthesia is a deeper level of sedation than Nitrous Oxide, Oral Conscious Sedation, or IV sedation. Safety is our biggest priority so general anesthesia in our office is administered by a certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA). General anesthesia requires a protected airway and is an appropriate choice for children or individuals with special needs.

Common Sedation Questions

IV sedation involves administering sedative drugs directly into the bloodstream, creating a deep state of relaxation. Patients remain conscious but often feel drowsy and unaware of their surroundings, with little to no memory of the procedure. It works quickly, and the dentist can adjust the sedation level throughout the treatment for maximum comfort.

Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) provides mild relaxation and wears off quickly, allowing patients to drive themselves home. Oral sedation involves taking a prescribed pill that induces a deeper state of relaxation but requires someone to drive you home. IV sedation offers the most controlled and profound sedation, often leading to partial or complete memory loss of the procedure, making it ideal for severe anxiety or lengthy treatments.

When administered by a trained professional, sedation dentistry is very safe. Vital signs are monitored throughout the procedure to ensure stability. Common side effects include drowsiness, dry mouth, mild nausea, and temporary memory loss. Serious complications are rare, and emergency medications are available in case of adverse reactions.

Sedation is ideal for patients with severe dental anxiety, strong gag reflexes, difficulty getting numb, or those undergoing long procedures. It’s also beneficial for individuals with special needs or movement disorders. Your dentist will evaluate your medical history to determine if sedation is appropriate.

Sedation significantly reduces awareness and anxiety, but local anesthesia is still used to numb the treatment area to prevent pain. Most patients under IV sedation feel no discomfort and have little to no memory of the procedure, making it an excellent option for those with dental fear. While you may be semi-conscious, the sedation creates a state where time passes quickly, and you wake up feeling as if the treatment lasted only a few moments.

The duration of sedation depends on the method used. Nitrous oxide wears off within minutes, allowing patients to resume normal activities immediately. Oral and IV sedation have longer-lasting effects, with drowsiness and grogginess persisting for several hours. Patients receiving oral or IV sedation should rest for the remainder of the day and avoid driving, operating machinery, or making important decisions for at least 24 hours. Full recovery typically occurs by the following morning.

Yes. Patients receiving oral or IV sedation are usually required to fast for at least six hours before their appointment to reduce the risk of nausea. Avoid alcohol, smoking, and caffeine before your procedure, as these can interfere with the sedative’s effectiveness. Wear comfortable clothing, and if you’re receiving IV or oral sedation, arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home. Your dentist will provide specific instructions regarding medications and any necessary pre-sedation preparations.

Yes, if you receive oral or IV sedation, you must have a responsible adult drive you home and stay with you for a few hours. The effects of sedation can linger, impairing judgment, coordination, and reflexes. Nitrous oxide is the only sedation method that wears off quickly enough to allow patients to drive themselves home shortly after the procedure. For stronger sedatives, arranging for a companion ensures your safety and comfort during the recovery period.

Yes, sedation is commonly used for children and individuals with special needs who may have difficulty sitting through a procedure. Nitrous oxide is the most frequently used method for children, as it is mild and wears off quickly. For more anxious patients or those undergoing extensive treatments, oral sedation or IV sedation may be recommended. Special needs patients who have difficulty remaining still for dental work may also benefit from sedation to ensure a safe and comfortable experience. Pediatric dentists and trained professionals tailor sedation approaches to meet the unique needs of each patient.

Sedation is administered by a trained dentist, anesthesiologist, or certified sedation provider. Throughout the procedure, your vital signs—including heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen levels—are continuously monitored to ensure safety. IV sedation allows for real-time adjustments to sedation levels, ensuring that you remain comfortably sedated without being overly sedated. In dental offices offering IV sedation, emergency medications and equipment are always available in case of unexpected reactions.
